Interview David LIPKE

Behind the full-throttle glamour of any fashion show is a small army of workers who labor for days to create those 15 minutes of runway theatrics. One of the most important lieutenants in this process is the lighting designer- and one of the most sought-after of these technicians-cum-artists is Paris-based THIERRY DREYFUS. Since his first lighting gig with designer Patrick Kelly in the mid-‘80s, Dreyfus has worked with everyone from Hedi Slimane to Tommy Hilfiger to Costume National. Now he’s set to launch a line of haute, high-priced lamps although he prefers to call them « objects of light ».

SO, WHO ARE YOU WORKING WITH THIS SEASON ?
I’m not doing any of the Milan men’s shows. I’m focusing on Paris, where I’ll be working on Hedi Slimane’s show and Helmut Lang and Sonia Rykiel.
I don’t think you can work perfectly if you work for too many people at once.

WHAT ROLE DOES LIGHT PLAY IN A FASHION SHOW ?
Light is an immaterial substance-a pure, energetic, spiritual and fluid emotion. It’s silent, but you feel it. It helps make a fashion show be what it should be, which is an emotion.
